a series of handmade lamps
These stone lamps are handmade using techniques invented by the Ancient Egyptians over 5,000 years ago. Designed to celebrate the natural beauty of Italian alabaster, the solid stone lampshades are lit up from within. This series is a vessel for my exploration of the lost art of stoneturning.
Each piece is handmade in Savannah, Georgia, carved from solid blocks of Italian alabaster, produce in limited edition, numbered and signed by Sean Tabris.
The Process
Each piece in this series is made-to-order, hand-carved in my studio from solid blocks of Italian alabaster. These lamps are made using techniques invented 5,000 years ago by the Ancient Egyptians. The wood lathe was designed to carve blocks of wood, turning them into wooden bowls and a variety of other wooden objects, yet modern wood lathes are capable of allowing us to carve soft stones by hand.
